Dr. Jonathan A. Bayogan, the College President, signed
a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Philippine Council for Agriculture,
Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) which is an
attached agency of Department of Science and Technology (DOST) as represented
by Executive Director Patricio S. Faylon, last January 10, 2013 in Los BaƱos,
Laguna, Philippines. Also present as witnesses in the MOA signing were Prof.
Cyril Tom B. Ranara from DNSC and Dir. Cesario R. Pagdilao, Deputy Executive
Director, R & D from PCAARRD-DOST. Mrs. Carolina T. Bosque, the Chief
Accountant of PCAARRD certified the availability of funds for the project.
Having been funded by the PCAARRD-DOST, Davao del
Norte State College received a project grant of 9.2 million on the project
entitled “Pangtawid Project for the Rehabilitation of Davao Oriental and
Compostela Valley brought about by Typhoon Pablo through Seaweed Farming”. The
project aims to establish seaweed farms using fast growing cultivars of Euchema sp/ Kappaphycus sp. which will
serve as livelihood to coastal communities in Davao Oriental and ComVal
Provinces affected by Typhoon Pablo. It is expected to be completed within two
years from March 2013 to February of 2014.
The project is a shared effort of DNSC and
PCAARRD-DOST to help rehabilitate the areas in some municipalities of Davao
Oriental, Compostela Valley and Davao del Norte fully devastated by the wrath
of Typhoon Pablo.
